OBJECTIVES


The objectives of EBOPRAS are to ensure that optimal plastic surgical care is rendered to the public in the countries of the European Community by taking the following measures :

  • educational standards for training in plastic surgery will be set,
  • clear descriptions of minimal requirements for training institutions and for those who are in charge of training in plastic surgery will be provided. Based on the agreement of participating institutions, minimal requirements will be subjected to site-visit control.

An European Board Examination will be established.

Exchange facilities for trainees among recognized training institutions will be created for use during professional training or for its implementation.

Man power in European plastic surgery will be subject to study and advice.


ORGANIZATION


The European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery groups together the elected representatives of the national societies of plastic surgery. The EBOPRAS functions as a working group, respecting the statutes and Rules of Procedure of the UEMS. The EBOPRAS seeks no legislative or executive power within European Community countries. The EBOPRAS shall achieve its objectives by setting standards and by encouraging health authorities, National plastic surgical and Scientific plastic surgical Societies to live up to such standards. Non-EC member countries are eligible for associate membership.


GOALS


Executive Committee

This Committee is in charge of the organization of the activities of the European Board. It also has the task to execute all decisions and to represent the foundation.


Residency Review and Accreditation Committee

This Committee will define the minimum requirements for plastic surgical training programs and the training facilities and hospitals employed in such programs. In a later phase, after accreditation by the EBOPRAS, these European plastic surgery training centers can participate in the European exchange program and its graduates can take the European Board Examination.


Education and Exchange Program Committee

This Committee will define the core of knowledge and capabilities expected of a European plastic surgeon. The Committee will set up and supervise a program promoting and regulating exchange between qualified and accredited centers and training programs in the EC member countries. These objectives will be achieved by :


  • exchange of residents in training
  • fellowships for residents and the young plastic surgeons in clinical plastic surgery, plastic surgical research and specialized plastic surgical fields.

Examination Committee

This Committee is appointed by the executive Committee every year. The Committee will organize a yearly European Board Examination qualifying plastic surgeons to become "fellow of the European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery".

EUROPEAN BOARD EXAMINATION


The Education and Exchange Committee of the European Board of Plastic Surgery is responsible for organising the examination.

Fully accredited plastic surgeons who have been accredited in one of the member countries of the European Union or are full members of the European Union of medical specialists are eligible to take this examination. Trainees in their final year of plastic surgical training may pass the examination but will get the diploma only after their national accreditation as plastic surgeon.

The European Board examination is not intended to replace national examinations and in countries where such an examination exists candidates should have taken the national examination prior to applying for the European Board Examination.

The examination is a written multiple choice examination as well as an oral examination based on slides (5 cases) in the applicant's own language provided this is one of the official European Union languages.

Candidates are also required to complete a log book which can be obtained from the Chairman of the Education Committee.


The Education Committee reserves the right to reject applications from candidates whose log book or qualifications are considered inadequate or incomplete.


APPLICATION


If you are interested in taking the European Board Examination in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, you should request further details of the examination as well as an application from the Chairman of the Education Committee.


The Following documents are mandatory :


1. A citizenship certificate

2. A copy of the certificate from your National Health Service confirming your full accreditation as a plastic surgeon or a confirmation that you are a trainee in your final year of plastic surgical training countersigned by the head of your department or head of specialist training programme.

3. The European Board Log Book countersigned by the head of your department or head of specialist training programme recognised by Health Authorities of your country.

4. The application form with your signature and countersigned by the President of Secretary General of your National Society for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery.
