Many people think that the word “ plastic surgery” is only related to the cosmectic or aesthetic surgery. A lot of persons use to mix plastic and aesthetic surgery ; in fact things need to be clarified.
The exact terminology for plastic surgery is in fact “plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery” . This is the official, academic and legal name for this surgical specialty. No other name is authorized and a plastic surgeon must be officially certified by the academy and the national or European board of this specialty. The certification is only given after a very long training combined to many years at the university : most of the time between 12 and 14 years in most European countries.
A complementary examination can also be given by an official European board : the EBOPRAS (European board of plastic reconstructive and aesthetic surgery) .
As a matter of fact the length of these specific studies is related to the complexity of plastic surgery that involves many sub-specialties in its cursus. Plastic surgery usually contains seven big components, each of whom can be divided in several parts.
They are : burn surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery, surgery after trauma and cancers, surgery of maformations and crippled people, cutaneous and dermatological surgery, aesthetic surgery.
This means that the number of procedures that a plastic surgeon can perform is absolutely enormous ; therefore some surgeons prefere to get specialized in some specific fields. However at the origin, they normally all have to follow the same long and complete training.
You can see for instance that aesthetic surgery is only a very small part of plastic surgery. It is of course the most well known of all, due to its excessive mediatisation, but it only deals with a handful types of procedures : cosmetic breast surgery (augmentation and reduction), face rejuvenation, body contouring and liposuctions, rhinoplasties, eyelids, protrubing ears, abdominoplasties…
All plastic surgeons in every European country are normally affiliated to the national society of their own country. Those societies are scientific associations promoting plastic surgery and responsible for the good and high standard of it among its members. All national plastic surgery societies of every European country are grouped together in a European superstructure :
The ESPRAS (European society of plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery) .
